| What other issues should the UF address? |
| # | Response Date | Comment |
| 1. | Wed, 10/10/07 6:58 PM | Clarifying requirements for classification moves based on additional units. I keep getting my units rejected. |
| 2. | Wed, 10/10/07 6:59 PM | Revising the evaluation forms that the students fill out when the instructor is being evaluated. |
| 3. | Wed, 10/10/07 6:59 PM | Counselors should not be paid full-time salaries for part time work (27.5) ; their hours should be equivalent to other non-instructional faculty with 35 hrs./week and 5 hrs. for other stuff. |
| 4. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:13 PM | Constrained Growth - The chemistry department at DVC continually has fully subscribed classes at the start of the term. We have more demand than we have class offerings. If we were to offer another section, it would fill immediately. Yet, we are not allowed to grow. |
| 5. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:17 PM | The use of Faculty Development funds, to promote teaching strategies and curriculum content. |
| 6. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:17 PM | Maternity Leave and Sick Leave... |
| 7. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:21 PM | surveys...nothing is ever done no matter how many of these we fill out |
| 8. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:23 PM | I feel strongly that !
more instructors should have to option of becoming full-time professio
nals rather than a 'subclass' of part-timers. (of course, I understand the value for instructors that teach a single class a year (or semester) as an enriching activity outside of their full-time profession. |
| 9. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:24 PM | Affiliation with CTA or CFT |
| 10. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:24 PM | Calendar - Starting and ending dates |
| 11. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:25 PM | Salary increases NOT being tied to increased enrollment but to area costs and competing districts. |
| 12. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:27 PM | Salary. |
| 13. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:29 PM | Look for a strictly PPO for heal benefits. Not just Kaiser and H!
ealthnet, but one that folks can take with them anywhere in the counttry. |
| 14. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:42 PM | Other educational institutions (i.e. Cal)do not limit PTrs to a certain percentage of load. instead of concentrating on more FT positions, the UF should seek to make employment balances and fair for all. for example, i am 27% of a lecturer salary and there are those that are 75%, it all depends on the needs of the department, but no one is treated like a second-class instructor. It is a much more pleasant environment to work in. thank you for your efforts, peace,
kelly |
| 15. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:48 PM | Salary, salary, salary |
| 16. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:49 PM | Bond Measure A, second time around. The Culinary Arts Department is a curriculum driven program. Available jobs have tripled in the last 10 years and will continue an upward trend for the next 10 years. Who and how are decisions being made about facility design? The Culinary Department does not want to get screwed once again via the first bond measure. All that money went to the book store facility. |
| 17. | Wed, 10/10/07 7:50 PM | Faculty input on determining appropriate class sizes. |
| 18. | Wed, 10/10/07 8:01 PM | Making pay-stubs readable/comprehensible. |
| 19. | Wed, 10/10/07 8:10 PM | I am concerned by questions 1, 2 and 4, which focus on issues, respectively, of academic satellites (these folks work under the same contract as the rest of us and should be treated in the same ways; differences between working conditions might be spoken to but academic and professional matters are not contractual matters); distance ed policy (also an academic and professional matter, to be dealt with on the individual division and departmental level); and enrollment management (yet again not a contractual matter but, at most, an academic concern, and even then, not one that faculty have a defined role in, certainly not a collective bargaining concern, even if UF leadership has decided to tie our compensation to enrollment). |
| 20. | Wed, 10/10/07 8:11 PM | How to better staff the college with online instructors. |
| 21. | Wed
, 10/10/07 9:07 PM | Make it a true evaluation by having both faculty and management involved in the evaluation. Most colleges, not to mention the corporate world, would be appalled by the current pathetic evaluation effort. |
| 22. | Wed, 10/10/07 9:08 PM | Salary must be pushed up and pushed up until we have a decent professional salary that would permit one person to support a family in the Bay Area. |
| 23. | Wed, 10/10/07 9:45 PM | 1. Eliminate 60% load limit/semester for Part-Time faculty members.
2. Just have two faculty member titles: Professor (full time...) and Associate Professor (part-time...).
3. Since full time and part-time faculty members have the same teaching responsibilities, including creating courses, make pay and benefits determined by length of service and course creation, not just by a limited load. |
| 24. | Wed, 10/10/07 9:55 PM | Facilities management -- some rooms have poor heating, most lack chalk, have trash on the floor, etc. |
| 25. | Wed, 10/10/07 10:05 PM | Calendar issues. I know the issue of a compressed calendar was studied and nixed, but there are other issue of calendar (mid-semester breaks at the mid mark rather than attached to religious holidays) and weekly schedule format -- M/W Tu/Th and F/SA for example. |
| 26. | Wed, 10/10/07 10:41 PM | getting lab load credit fixed (made equivalent to lecture) |
| 27. | Wed, 10/10/07 10:52 PM | Re-thinking the value of Optional Flex mini-trainings. Seem to waste money and not provide much in-depth or thoughtful professional development. Rather have more organized institutes with professional trainers for more substantive time. |
| 28. | Wed, 10/10/07 11:34 PM | Salary and medical benefits will continue to be a concern that we should never let go unaddressed.
• Continue to make sure that our grievance procedure "works" -- and that we are a lot more successful in confronting and prevailing in this issues. Those the particulars of each grievance are private, it would be nice to know (through Table Talk) what issues are being addressed and how things are resolved - it's always been a mystery |
| 29. | Thu, 10/11/07 12:03 AM | 1. Eliminating part-time rehire rights.
2. Reducing part-timers influence on UF elections (i.e. the travesty of misinformation that led to voting down of affiliation.) |
| 30. | Thu, 10/11/07 12:16 AM | replacement of contract language allowing course cancellation by management when enrollment is less than 20 students to language that states that "as long as a department meets its productivity goal for the year, then course cancellation within that department will be entirely up to the department chair". |
| 31. | Thu, 10/11/07 1:32 AM | I'm unclear as to what is meant by "District-Wide Distance Education Policy". The are specific issues (e.g. online load limits) that can reasonably be construed as a part of collective bargaining, but policy, as generally defined, is a academic and professional matter. |
| 32. | Thu, 10/11/07 4:48 AM | timely parity pay |
| 33. | Thu, 10/11/07 5:09 AM | Part-time faculty should be given a breakdown of class hours worked and office hours worked. I never know if I'm getting paid for all the hours that I work. The current payroll system is very confusing to me and the check stub does not help to clarify my doubts. Thanks. |
| 34. | Thu, 10/11/07 3:40 PM | reducing duties of dept chair (and assigning them to less expensive classified employees). |
| 35. | Thu, 10/11/07 4:20 PM | The issue of equity in load needs to be addressed. Science faculty teaching labs receive 75% load. The demands of teaching lab are very comparable to a traditional lecture. There is preparation required, grading of!
lab quizzes, tests, and lab reports. A film instructor receives lectur
e credit (i.e. 100% load)eventhough a majority of the class time is used to watch a film. Those teaching in the math "lab" also receive 75% load, but there is no prepartion and no correcting involved. Science labs ought to be loaded at 100% just as other classes that involve preparation and correcting student assignments are loaded. |
| 36. | Thu, 10/11/07 4:22 PM | Parking, pay, and benefits! |
| 37. | Thu, 10/11/07 5:20 PM | Methods for ensuring that payroll and human resources processes pay & increases in a timely manner, not as an afterthought. Make recommendations to District to improve efficiency of payroll matters so that part-time faculty are not adversely affected. |
| 38. | Thu, 10/11/07 6:42 PM | Subbing for one hour classes, and c!
ompensation for meetings and serving on all committees, for part time faculty. Too many classes get canceled when there is only one hour envolved |
| 39. | Thu, 10/11/07 7:09 PM | issues surrounding educational requirements for step placement advancement....the language doesn't match the intent and therefore much is hazy and hard to interpret |
| 40. | Thu, 10/11/07 9:12 PM | Untying salary increases to enrollment increases |
| 41. | Thu, 10/11/07 11:17 PM | Removing Curriculum responsibilities from contract since it's an Academic & Professional matter |
| 42. | Fri, 10/12/07 2:41 AM | Allow part-time faculty to become full time. |
| 43. | Fri, 10/12/07 6:21 PM | Campus
wide policy regarding DVC GE Area criteria used in determing which courses may meet DVC GE. |
| 44. | Fri, 10/12/07 7:13 PM | I am not sure the issues of #7 and #8 are the writing of the policies , but poor implimentation. Both policies were ignored in the Social Sciences Dept. |
| 45. | Mon, 10/15/07 4:41 AM | continued increase of faculty salaries
Maintenance of benefits for current and retired faculty |
| 46. | Mon, 10/15/07 7:34 AM | smarter executive board |
| 47. | Mon, 10/15/07 7:09 PM | Reassigned time is the most important issue, for various positions including Curriculum, SLO, and other faculty issues neglected in the recent past. I very much would like to be involved, but I don't want other responsibilites to fall by the wayside either, so I'm unable to volunteer for anything without sufficient reassinged time.
As always, salary is the most important issue since that is a measure of how important faculty members are to the college/district. |
| 48. | Mon, 10/15/07 11:00 PM | Intellectual property rights |
| 49. | Mon, 10/15/07 11:04 PM | Creating permanent part time positions |
| 50. | Mon, 10/15/07 11:09 PM | none |
| 51. | Mon, 10/15/07 11:19 PM | address inequalities in class sizes and how lecture lab section load between departments. We need to have a category for science labs with load equal to lecture (0.2) |
| 52. | Mon, 10/15/07 11:39 PM | flex time obligations...why do we have them? |
| 53. | Tue, 10/16/07 12:36 AM | Faculty rights in assessing student competence once in-class performance demonstrates misplacement or underpreparedness - this is needed in the face of increasing student "entitlement" attitudes even when they're wrong or incompetent. We have no advocate against the current student focused setup. |
| 54. | Tue, 10/16/07 1:50 AM | Haphazard use of productivity statistics, which are highly flawed, to make programmatic decisions.
Opaque, non-democratic box2a decision-making--- |
| 55. | Tue, 10/16/07 3:01 AM | maternity leave for options for faculty, written statements about options for faculty, and a written maternity leave negotiating format. |
| 56. | Tue, 10/16/07 6:55 AM | Some sort of policy that defines what an expected work week is. If I have to teach 5 days a week (for almost 20 years now!), is it fair that others schedule themselves for 2 or 3 days per week on campus? |
| 57. | Tue, 10/16/07 7:47 AM | Make the summary checklist match the student evaluation form (#8) |
| 58. | Tue, 10/16/07 8:31 AM | Summer workload for things like moving libraries (or other areas which take much coordination and fa!
culty time when not being paid, yet expected). |
| 59. | Tue, 10/16/07 5:46 PM | Proporation of manegers and up to factuly staff and students is out of sync, both in budget and personal. |
| 60. | Tue, 10/16/07 11:53 PM | INcrease in salary - onetime bonus to offset what we lost due to pay cut. |
| 61. | Wed, 10/17/07 3:08 AM | Campus Climate
Mediator/Facilitator for Conflict Resolution at each campus District Code of Ethics |
| 62. | Wed, 10/17/07 4:23 AM | Sabbatical leave, pay, health insurance, acuracy, transparency and timeliness in payrole processing, Office space for part time faculty |
| 63. | Thu, 10/18/07 3:06 PM | PAY! WE are still one of the lowest paid faculties in the community college "family" of CA, are we not??? |
| 64. | Thu, 10/18/07 6:26 PM | Increase salary of faculty to be competitive in the Bay Area. |
| 65. | Fri, 10/19/07 7:25 PM | The UF (along with everyone at CCCCD) needs to refer to SRC as a division or a campus, not as in opposition to DVC. We are part of DVC. DVC has two campuse!
s--Pleasant Hill (PHC) and San Ramon (SRC). As we all need to acknowledge, language influences perception. Changing perception often starts with language. Clearly, perception needs to be adjusted; that's part of the problem of increasing communication and cooperation between two campuses and among the colleges in the district. |
| 66. | Mon, 10/22/07 11:31 PM | If way salary is calculated is going to be based on the number of units taught rather than the number of hours, how will this effect part-time instructors whose course load is based 1/2 on a lab like Computer Science Instructors and others. |
| 67. | Wed, 10/24/07 4:39 PM | Encouraging faculty to engage in more professional development through funding, time, etc. |
| 68. | Thu, 10/25/07 10:27 PM | I!
think that UF, especially at DVC, needs to address the question of di
versity in hiring. |
