If your department were given some new one-time money, how might you spend it?
#Response DateComment
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:05 PMProfessional development
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:05 PMMore books.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:08 PMI'd have to talk with the other FT faculty first.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:12 PMI would like to spend it in many ways, either buying some better and more up to date films, or paying for a guest speaker, or paying to attend a seminar or professional development conference.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:13 PMWe would have to discuss this as a department. We certainly could use release time in order to catch up with all the developments we have not been able to do, since we are stretched so tight: most of us are teaching/working on overload, and we are slipping into the morass of work.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:14 PMupdate equipment and materials used by students
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:17 PMPay for professional development.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:19 PMChemistry lab equipment.

.Wed, 10/10/07 7:29 PMComputers fo r the Brentwood center instructors
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:30 PMLab supplies. Portable equipment. Outreach projets to high schools.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:30 PMfacilities
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:33 PMCreating a bank of FTS so that we could experiment with new courses.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:41 PMnew computers
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:46 PMtransfer level faculty staff development
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:54 PMTechnical equipment for our classrooms.
.New facility and equipment for all lab classes.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:57 PMI am in PE and we need too many facility/equipment improvements to count. We are so dependent on facilities and they are woefully inadequate.
.Wed, 10/10/07 7:59 PMNew technology
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:00 PMNew dance floor, repair the moldy women's faculty bathroom.
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:07 PMOne time money is not near as useful as money for release time that is ongoing and helps our very large dept. take care of the myriad of business we have to finish in any given semester. But that said, we would most likely spend the mon! ey on pilot studies for some new classes we have in mind (paying stipe nds to those designing new classes and doing research on the efffectiveness of those new classes), on continuing the design of a major for our dept. and tieing that major to some new articulations with UC and CSU we'd like to create. (Again, we would use it for stipends for the extensive time faculty would need to put in writing course outlines, coordinating with the articulation officer, and designing the major.) We would also resurrect some of our campus-wide yearly programs we used to put on.
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:16 PMProgram expenses.
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:21 PMmore sections of online courses funding for taking classes that would be available through staff development applications like the funding available for conferences
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:40 PMUpgrade our equipment, offices, and facilities. Possibly use it to pay for SLO development.
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:53 PMSadly, we would probably need to use it for equipment maintenance (which is not adequately supported by the college at this time).
.Wed, 10/10/07 8:57 PMEquipment, choral risers, videos/dvds, cds.
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:15 PMvideo library
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:22 PMadditional classes
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:31 PMAn Intaglio printing press and electric etching baths for print making courses. Ditigal media programs--Dream Weaver, Photoshop, computer animation programs, etc.
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:38 PMFor new computers.
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:40 PMOn more learning resources for students (DVDs, CDs, Videos, computer programs).
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:46 PMTraining for Mathematica, Derive, HP Tablets, LCD overhead in classrooms, graphing calculators, all technology. We have the technology & no training for using it.
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:47 PMAudio-visual equipment for student use (doc cams, one computer with Microsoft Office and Internet software tools, along with an Internet connection for presentations to add to existing equipment).
.Wed, 10/10/07 9:51 PMto pay classroom outside speakers
.Wed, 10/10/07 10:15 PMPay part time instructors who create new courses that increase college enrollment.
.Wed, 10/10/07 10:17 PMWe would probably spend it on some selected lab equipment, or perhaps on part-time student help for labs that we run on evenings or on Saturdays.
.Wed, 10/10/07 10:31 PMHappy hour?
.Wed, 10/10/07 10:34 PMDeveloping new curriculum
.Wed, 10/10/07 11:01 PMUpgrading our technology resources.
.Wed, 10/1 0/07 11:04 PMEquipment, temporary staffing to help catch up and organize the department/lab to make it easier to manage (we currently have no classified staff), and/or release time for professional development to upgrade skills in a changing discipline.
.Wed, 10/10/07 11:19 PMI would spend the money on getting new demonstrations and increasing the scope of chemistry lab.
.Wed, 10/10/07 11:44 PMWithout some guidelines, it's hard to know. Are we talking about "you can build a new building" money -- this would be my first choice. Or are we talking about enough so that everyone can and was encouraged to attend a conference, workshop, etc. and be fully paid for. I would, of course, love both.
.Wed, 10/10/07 11:4! 7 PMComputer for the office Supplies for the Math Lab Supplies for the classroom
.Thu, 10/11/07 12:11 AMequipment and supplies for labs
.Thu, 10/11/07 12:13 AMRestoration of facilities.
.Thu, 10/11/07 12:28 AMtoo vague- if it is unrestricted, then I would like to see an "endowed chair" faculty position where we could hire someone on sabbatical from another institution to be a "professor in residence"
.Thu, 10/11/07 1:50 AMSee #6 below. Try these things on a one-time basis.
.Thu, 10/11/07 3:46 AMfield trips
.Thu, 10/11/07! 4:59 AMSupplies, especially for part-timers; e.g. ink cartridges for the office printer, printing paper, etc. Lack of it, hinders class preparation.
.Thu, 10/11/07 5:23 AMUpdate the lab room and new educational videos
.Thu, 10/11/07 7:05 AMEquipment purchases and interior refurbishing.
.Thu, 10/11/07 4:09 PMPaid, recurrent(e.g. once per week) course-specific professional development of faculty.

.Thu, 10/11/07 4:34 PMPurchase software
.New furniture for f aculty offices, new software for classroom, conference travel, establish an updated DVD library, compensation for outside projects such as program review, content review, SLO's, secretarial support, painting interior of faculty offices,....
.Thu, 10/11/07 5:54 PMThere is a gap between the real world needs including students and industries and the teaching programs and methods. This gap shall be assessed and adequately addressed. Finance the research a, publicity of the results, and department wide discussion.
.Thu, 10/11/07 6:26 PMDeveloping high school courses and connections, developing new brochures.
.Thu, 10/11/07 6:59 PMCeiling Fans, racks for storage, new hand weights.
.Thu, 10/11/07 9:22 PMProbably in some technology-driven way.
.Thu, 10/11/07 11:23 PMDevelop online counseling program
.Fri, 10/12/07 2:50 AMsave it.
.Fri, 10/12/07 4:55 AMConferences. There is virtually no opportunity, particularly for adjunct instructors, to find out what is current in their field.
.Fri, 10/12/07 6:59 PMOur discipline ia a smaller discipline within a department which is dominated by a larger discipline...I doubt that money would find it way into the pockets of the smaller disciplines especially if they do not offer a lab. However,if it did trickle down we would like to sen! d it on models, and materials such as DVDs which would enhance the cl assroom experience and learning. Perhaps also on release time so that facutly would have time for new course and program development.
.Fri, 10/12/07 7:56 PMeguipment and classroom / lab area improvements
.Fri, 10/12/07 8:11 PMMore full timers

.Mon, 10/15/07 4:46 AMequipment, new computers and printers for student lab, new software, clickers
.Mon, 10/15/07 5:01 AMOne laptop computer that could be checked out and used by faculty in the classrooms that already have projectors in order to give slide lectures. Not all part time instructors have laptops.
.Mon, 10/15/07 1:39 PMThat really depends on how much, doesn't it?
.Mon, 10/15/07 7:14 PMNew equipment--additional copying machines, etc. Additional hours for part-time staff to perform clerical work.
.Mon, 10/15/07 11:10 PMI'm not sure. This would have to be discussed with all faculty members in my department.

.Mon, 10/15/07 11:58 PMOutdoor facilities for faculty and students.
.Tue, 10/16/07 12:51 AMAdd equipment and improve the quality of facilitites.
! .Tue, 10/16/07 12:54 AMOn upgrading computer equipment and to pay for dedicated technological training for faculty in a timeframe (instead of useless division meetings - packets of printed material instead?)that doesn't send everyone into the meeting time maze. Smart classroom use and competence with equipment.
.Tue, 10/16/07 1:31 AMtechnology and software, involving adjunct faculty in assessment activities and related professional development
.Tue, 10/16/07 1:58 AMmarketing, release time for strategic planning
.Tue, 10/16/07 3:32 AM1. a copy machine/scanner for the department. 2. a digital image librarian.
.Tue, 10/1! 6/07 4:18 AMI'l lobby for equipment upgrades in general, then laptops and projectors to go with them for better presentations for all the classes in our department. And some one-on-one training in using the laptops/projector combination.
.Tue, 10/16/07 5:04 AMUpdated equipment and software. Provide reassigned time for outreach.
.Tue, 10/16/07 7:35 AM?
.Tue, 10/16/07 7:53 AMSupplies
.Tue, 10/16/07 4:56 PMpurchase licenses for software
.Tue, 10/16/07 5:33 PMwhere to start? art materials, model money for classes other than figure drawing.
.Tue, 10/16/07 6:54 PMEquipment!
.Tue, 10/16/07 7:07 PMProbably on some big-ticket item that could be used by all department faculty and classes.
.Tue, 10/1! 6/07 7:37 PMMore Incentives to develop new courses or help to revise older courses with updated materials, videos, visual aids, etc to spice them up. Pay for SLO development, content review, all the extra stuff that faculty have to do.
.Tue, 10/16/07 7:52 PMResources for courses (videos, CD's on subject matter covered)
.Tue, 10/16/07 8:34 PMApple laptop computers for everyone who wants one!
.Tue, 10/16/07 11:35 PMClassroom technologies. Most of the classrooms are 19th century nightmares.
.Wed, 10/17/07 12:00 AMConferences, research help
.Wed, 10/17! /07 2:00 AMImproving our facilities as well as o ur equipment so that we can provide a safer and up to date working environment for student to use.
.Wed, 10/17/07 3:14 AMDevelopiing new courses
.Wed, 10/17/07 4:54 AMSpend it on purchasing and setting up an internet based software for course assignment, whereby all faculty can enter their preferences in a web page and a system automatically based on a set of rules and priorities assigne courses to those who are qulified and interested to teach starting from the ones with the highest priority. This is done in a way that is transparent, organized, timely, and fare.
.Wed, 10/17/07 7:50 PMequipment and classroom items
.Thu, 10/18/07 4:38 PMProbably pay to have the SLOs completed under faculty direction. Still do not think faculty should be paid for working on them. These are state-wide management-drive projects. If the SLOs are so important for improving classroom results, let the state fund them.
.Thu, 10/18/07 6:57 PMUpgrade our technology: phones, fax, computers, copy machine and increase our supplies.
.Fri, 10/19/07 1:16 AMNewer/better classroom demos and lab equipment and computers and printers for part-time faculty. Other items to be determined by discussion among all department faculty.
.Fri, 10/19/07 7:39 PMWe might spend it on release time to create a strategy for long term scheduling policies, practice and goals. I'd like to see us spend i! t for inservice to improve instruction on our campus.
.Fri, 10/19/07 10:24 PMUpdating equipment in our labs and classrooms
.Sat, 10/20/07 12:11 AMCREATIVE WRITING AND COMMUNITY LITERARY ARTS CONFERENCE
.Sat, 10/20/07 9:55 PMTough question for a PTer (who's not privy to the same discussions as FT faculty because we're not invited to attend or participate in their meetings).
.Mon, 10/22/07 5:41 PMHelping new faculty to sit in lectures or team teach with senior faculty to help them become comfortable in the classroom.
.Mon, 10/22/07 6:00 PMcreating video lessons for podcast. Equipment so that an individual could do ! it without having to schedule with others, for example an ability to switch between two or three cameras live - lecture view, board view, demo view.
.Tue, 10/23/07 12:26 AMWe would utilize the funding by replacing old, deteriorating equipment with new state-of-the-art equipment and purchasing additional supplies, materials and equipment to address current industry standards.
.Wed, 10/24/07 4:55 PMComputers, staff development conferences.
.Wed, 10/24/07 5:33 PMequipment
